This heavenly Japanese dinner is made at home and beats any comparable Japanese restaurant’s version! When you cook at home, you get to control exactly what ingredients go into the food and with this one, I can testify that the homemade teriyaki bowls taste MUCH BETTER than anything I have ever tasted at ANY restaurant! Plus, sodium is always sky high when eating out, but here, you can choose to use reduced sodium soy sauce, thereby decreasing the sodium in your recipe. If you want to reduce the carbohydrates and sugar, reduce the amount of honey.
My mouthwatering Teriyaki Chicken Bowls contain chicken breasts, high quality extra virgin olive oil, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, honey, rice vinegar, sriracha, cornstarch, and the sides include rice, broccoli, chives, and sesame seeds as the garnish. I love easy one-pot meals like this - one pot is all that is needed to make this dinner and it's such a popular dinner in my family!

Homemade Honey-Teriyaki Sauce
I promise you that as soon as you realize how easy it is to whip up your own homemade honey-teriyaki sauce, you will not be buying any store-bought teriyaki sauce any longer! This homemade version uses pantry staples, including:
- Soy sauce
- Garlic cloves
- Ginger root
- Honey
- Rice vinegar
- Cornstarch
Teriyaki in Japanese can be broken up into two words: “teri” which means gloss or shine in Japanese, and “yaki,” which means “grill.” In the United States, we consider teriyaki to be a sauce or marinade, but in Japan, it’s a cooking method. Teriyaki sauce, as opposed to teriyaki marinade is intended to be a glaze or grilling sauce. Although a teriyaki marinade includes the same ingredients as teriyaki sauce, it is not thickened and cooked before marinating. The honey teriyaki sauce can also be used as a marinade.
No Marinating
Savory, garlicky chicken that doesn’t even need to be marinated, melts in your mouth on top of some hot white rice. This teriyaki sauce recipe is TO DIE FOR and you’ll wonder why you have waited THIS LONG to whip up a batch of your own teriyaki bowls.
Benefits of Ginger Root
I’ve always heard that ginger and garlic are fantastic for fighting inflammation. Did you know that ginger has a history of being used in traditional and alternative medicine to aid digestion, reduce nausea, and help fight the flu and common colds? According to Healthline’s article, the fragrance and flavor of ginger are derived from its natural oils, specifically gingerol.
Gingerol is the main bioactive compound in ginger and is responsible for most of ginger’s medicinal properties. It also contains powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, pursuant to research. It may help to reduce oxidative stress, which is the result of having excess free radicals in the body. Free radicals occur from living everyday modern life.
Ginger’s Role in Weight Loss
Healthline’s article reports that ginger may play a key role in weight loss. A 2019 review found that ginger supplementation significantly reduced body weight, and the waist-hip ratio in people who are overweight or obese.
Further, a 2016 study of 80 women concluded that ginger could help reduce body mass index (BMI) and insulin levels. High insulin levels are associated with obesity. Study participants received higher doses of 2 grams of ginger powder for 12 consecutive weeks. The evidence in favor of ginger’s role in helping prevent obesity is stronger in animal studies. Rats and mice who consumed ginger water or ginger extract consistently experienced deceases in body weight, even when they were fed high-fat diets. Ginger’s ability to influence weight loss may be related to specific mechanisms, such as its potential to help increase the number of calories burned and reducing inflammation.
Recipe Tips
I prefer to chop all the items needing chopped at the start. That way, once it’s time to cook, the chicken, garlic, and green onions are all chopped, and the ginger root is grated. If you do things this way, it will expedite the cooking process. This recipe is not only easy and uses minimal dishes, but it’s absolutely divine!
My two favorite things about this recipe (besides the AMAZING taste) are 1). Minimal dishes, and 2) Dinner is done in about 15 minutes!
