Toddlers should be practicing their fine motor skills daily and this is one fun way to accomplish that. This is the perfect educational activity as you can teach your kids about our country and the American flag as they make their very own patriotic craft!

What is Independence Day?

Independence Day is an annual holiday in the United States of America that is celebrated on July 4th with barbecues, summer cookouts, parades, parties, and fireworks. Independence Day, also known as the 4th of July or July 4th, is a celebration of the passage of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.

According to Brittanica’s article, Congress voted in favor of independence from Great Britain on July 2nd, but the process of revising the Declaration of Independence, which was initially drafted by Thomas Jefferson in coordination with John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and William Livingston, took two more days to complete.

During the early years of the republic, Independence Day was celebrated with parades and toasting ceremonies to celebrate a new nation.

Items needed to make a Paper Plate American Flag

Paper plate. A paper plate is the “canvas” you’ll be painting on.

Blue and white paint. You can use acrylic or non-toxic and washable toddler friendly blue and white paint.

Paint brushes. Grab a few paint brushes and let the kids get to work.

Stapler. A stapler is needed to secure the paper plate. My daughter loves this kid’s stapler.

Red and white tissue paper. Strips of red and white tissue paper make the stripes in the American flag.

Scissors. Grab a pair of adult or toddler scissors, if you want the kids to cut the tissue paper. Toddlers LOVE helping so use this opportunity to let them help.

Glue stick. A glue stick is needed to stick the tissue paper to the paper plate.

How to make the best Paper Plate American Flag

STEP 1: Give the kids paint brushes and blue acrylic paint to paint a paper plate blue. Once the paint has dried, fold it in half and staple it so that it sticks together. You can paint with blue over the staples, like we did, or leave as is. Use white paint to paint stars on the halved paper plate and let dry.

STEP 2: Use scissors or have the kids use kid-friendly scissors to cut one-inch-wide pieces of red and white tissue paper. I used 4 white strips and 3 red. See the photos in this post for examples.

STEP 3: On the back side, use a glue stick to stick the tissue paper to the paper plate.

STEP 4: If you make this kid’s craft, don’t forget to leave a rating and comment!

Benefits of fine motor activities for toddlers

Fine motor skills are critical for children, particularly toddlers. Practicing fine motor skills daily is integral as it uses the small hand and finger muscles. Fine motor activities foster independence, build confidence, improve hand-eye coordination. Learning how to master fine motor skills is important as it teaches kids to use the small muscles that will be used to feed and dress themselves, not to mention creating, zipping, buttoning, tying shoes, and eventually writing.
