Give the kids a chance to exercise by going out on a nature walk to collect some rocks. Grab some paint brushes and acrylic paint colors of your choice and get busy creating some colorfully creepy Halloween rocks! My four-year-old and I painted one to two coats of acrylic paint on these rocks. She inherited the creative gene, totally from me, and as such, really enjoys arts and crafts, especially painting! Some had to dry before we could paint an extra layer. We like to display our painted rocks out on the front porch alongside our pumpkins. If you’re looking for some creative inspiration, check out the rocks we painted. They’re easy and don’t require you to be extra crafty or artistic. Not only that, but this is a free kid’s craft if you have acrylic paint and paint brushes like we did.
We painted these two years ago, in fall 2021, and you can see, the paint has held up pretty well, especially considering we live in a cold, snowy climate, with lots of stormy weather. Plus, the whole point is for the little hands to use their fine motor skills and have a blast as they get to decorate their own Halloween rocks!
Items needed to paint Halloween Rocks
Rocks. Turn this into a fun adventure by taking the kids on a nature walk to gather rocks to paint. Depending on what types of Halloween monsters you want to paint, you may need flat rocks, round rocks, and other rocks of different sizes and shapes.
Paint. We use acrylic paint as it’s tough and will withstand weather such as snow, ice, etc.
Paint brushes. I’ve found paint brushes at Dollar Tree, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Walmart, and Amazon.
What should we paint?
Get creative and paint mummies, gravestones, monsters including Frankenstein, ghosts, witches, black cats, creepy clowns, pumpkins, candy corns – the list goes on and on.
How to Paint Halloween Rocks
STEP 1: Take the kids on a walk to gather rocks.
STEP 2: Prepare a surface to paint on. I save ads I receive in the mail and use those to paint on. You can also use a craft mat.
STEP 3: Pour the desired colors of acrylic paint into a palette and let the kids have fun painting their rocks into all types of spooktacular art. If you don’t have a palette, use an old lid from a large container or a plastic container that you won’t be eating out of after painting. Walmart and Dollar Tree sell palettes for about a dollar a piece.
