This is my dad’s delicious French Toast recipe. He was born outside of Munich, so I don’t know if this is a German recipe as he was raised by my lovely and amazing German grandmother, but either way, it’s DIVINE and you will fall in love with it, just as my family and I have! Maybe we should call it German French Toast?! Germany and France do border each other, but I’m pretty sure this is an American breakfast recipe. Either way, we only make this mouthwatering version of French Toast in our house!
This is the only French Toast recipe my husband and I have ever made, so it’s all we know. But trust me, once you find a recipe this fabulous, you won’t want to try any others! My simple breakfast recipe contains white bread, milk, eggs, vanilla, and cinnamon. Topping Variations
You don’t have to pour maple syrup on top of your French Toast. In fact, my family often loves eating Nutella on top instead of syrup. Other topping options include chocolate sauce, whipped cream, fresh fruit, chopped nuts, and a cinnamon-sugar mixture.
Ingredients in My Dad’s French Toast
White bread. Use white bread or French Toast bread for the best results. If you have stale white bread, that is most ideal as it will absorb the milk, eggs, vanilla, and cinnamon much more than fresh white bread.
Milk. Use any kind of milk you wish. We always use 1% organic milk.
Eggs. Eggs and milk make the French Toast “dip.”
Vanilla. Vanilla is used to sweeten the toast and is okay to use imitation vanilla although pure vanilla extract will taste better.
Cinnamon. A smidge of cinnamon gives this breakfast recipe flavor and spice.
How to Make the Best French Toast
STEP 1: If you can, use older or stale bread and preferably white bread. In a medium bowl, whisk 1 cup of milk (any type will work), two eggs, one teaspoon vanilla, and one teaspoon ground cinnamon.
STEP 2: Spray a large frying pan or griddle with non-stick cooking spray and turn the heat to high. Let the pan heat up before adding the toast on the pan.
STEP 3: After the pan has had time to heat, dip both sides of each slice of bread in the batter and then lay it on the hot pan. I can fit three pieces of toast on one frying pan at a time. A griddle would be handy for this recipe. After 3 minutes, flip each piece of toast over and cook for another 3 minutes, for a total of 6 minutes, or until the toast is fully cooked.
Serve with butter and pure maple syrup. You can also add fresh fruit, whipped cream, Nutella, or nuts for a sweet and flavorful breakfast or brunch.
Leftovers
If you have any leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours. Reheat in the microwave and add butter or maple syrup before serving.
