The origin of the term “monkey bread” is unknown. Food historians believe it comes from a pastry that is a finger food, and those who use their hands to pick it apart, just as a monkey might use his or her hands to eat. Actually, monkey bread’s origins trace back to a Hungarian dessert known as arany galuska, which means “golden dumpling.” Hungarian immigrants brought this dish to the United States in the 1880s and both Hungarian and Jewish-Hungarian bakeries started to sell this popular bread in the mid-twentieth century.

Ingredients in Monkey Bread

King’s Hawaiian Rolls. Use a 12 pack of King’s Sweet Hawaiian dinner rolls.

Granulated Sugar. Sugar sweetens up the biscuits just enough.

Cinnamon. Ground cinnamon gives the biscuits some spice and provides anti-inflammatory and antioxidants. Healthline’s article reports that cinnamon could protect against heart disease and could also improve sensitivity to insulin.

Salt. Salt enhances the flavors of the other ingredients as well as provides flavor.

Walnuts. Save time and buy pre-chopped walnuts or chop them yourself. Walnuts are an excellent source of antioxidants. In fact, according to Healthline’s article, walnuts provide healthy fats, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

Butter. You can use either salted or unsalted butter. The recipe calls for ½ cup, or one stick, of butter.

Brown sugar. Brown sugar mixed with butter creates a thick, sweet, caramelized topping.
