My four-year-old was so excited to make these—Halloween cannot come soon enough for her! I think that goes for most toddlers as they all love holidays. My husband and I took her grocery shopping at Walmart to buy graham crackers, frosting, Halloween sprinkles, and candy eyes, and the level of excitement was super high. It makes me happy to see my girl so happy though! Halloween is so exciting and oh, to be a kid again! If you like this idea, then you’ll love my Halloween Glove Candy Bags and Painted Halloween Rocks!

If we had cousins nearby, it would have been so much fun to have had them all decorate these Halloween Haunted Houses together, but my nephews and nieces all live in California and Arizona. This is one fun toddler and older kid activity. I must admit, as an adult, it was completely fun and a way to get those creative juices flowing. The best part about it—at the end, you can leave these spooky haunted houses out on Halloween for a spooky treat!

Pin this now to save for later!

My husband was making fun of my candy haunted house, calling it a “dog house,” but his huge house ended up collapsing and mine is still standing up the following morning, so I’d say my structural engineering skills supersede his! HAHA! We are a competitive family but still know how to have a good time. Four-year-old Keira is usually the first one done, but not when it came to constructing Halloween haunted houses! She was the last one at the table, eating—I mean decorating—her spooky house. To say our family had fun is an understatement—we had an absolute blast making these! (and yes, toddlers like mine will just want to eat all the decorations, but it was SO FUN and we made some great memories!).

Halloween Haunted Houses are every kid’s dream Halloween recipe. This recipe is so versatile – you can pick any type of decorations you like. To make this easy Halloween recipe, you’ll need graham crackers, vanilla frosting, chocolate sandwich cookies such as Oreo’s, food coloring (here’s our favorite food coloring), candy eyes, candy corn, and any other Halloween candy you like.

How to make the best Halloween Haunted Houses

STEP 1: Separate the frosting into bowls and add food coloring (here’s our favorite food coloring) to each of the bowls. Stir the food coloring in with the frosting and use it to affix things to your graham cracker houses. Alternatively, you can make your own white frosting and that can be used to mix with food coloring to form different colors.

We bought lots of candy from our local dollar store along with eyeball gum although once you open the packaging, the eyeballs are only white gum balls. Walmart had a wonderful selection of all types of Halloween candy decorations for a decent price. We bought Oreos to put large candy eyeballs in and affixed them to the house.

What kinds of decorations should I use on my Halloween Haunted House?

We found lots of Halloween sprinkles and candy eyes at Walmart. I’ve found candy googly eyes at Michaels in the past; Amazon also sells them. Costco has a great picking as does Sam’s Club, Target, and grocery stores. We found these large candy eyeballs at Dollar Tree as well as candy corns and candy pumpkins. Feel free to get as creative as you like—kids love this activity and the more fun you have, the better experience it will be for them—not to mention making some wonderful memories!

Items to decorate your haunted houses:

If you use green frosting, you can create “grass” and then plant some flowers using a red or pink frosting color, turning your haunted house into a big house with a garden. We also used delicious Pretzel Ghosts on our Halloween Haunted Houses.
