I had never heard of fry sauce until we packed up and left socal and entered a new world in the state of Utah. I remember the first time a fast food employee asked me: “Would you like fry sauce?” and I was baffled and shocked at the question as I had no clue what fry sauce was.  Let’s be real – the first time I tried fry sauce, I loved every bite of the tangy orange-colored mayo-based sauce. Fast forward nearly five years and I’m still a huge fan.

Making your own fry sauce takes fry sauce to a whole new level. I can’t believe I waited this long to make my own. I contemplated making my own fry sauce for years, but never actually brought myself to do it until yesterday. I was blown away by how much tastier my homemade fry sauce was compared to the other versions I’ve tasted. My homemade fry sauce won my husband and five-year-old daughter over and we could not get enough! I made it with my Air Fryer French Fries and it was the perfect sauce for my fries! My whole family loved it and it lasted maybe five minutes! My Corn Dog Mini Muffins also taste great dipped in fry sauce!

My insanely delicious fry sauce recipe contains mayonnaise, ketchup, pickle juice (from a dill pickle jar), paprika, salt, and cayenne, and takes just 3 minutes to make! If you like tasty dipping sauces, then you’ll love my Homemade Ranch Dressing recipe!

Origin of Fry Sauce

Where did fry sauce originate? If you research where fry sauce came from, you’ll find that most people agree it came from Utah; however, one person in this Deseret News article maintains that his father, the founder of Utah’s famous Arctic Circle restaurant, invented it. Wherever you buy French fries in Utah, you’ll most likely be offered fry sauce. Even restaurant franchises that operate in many states hand out fry sauce in restaurants in Utah.

What is fry sauce really made of?

Fry sauce is a dipping sauce that is typically made with mayonnaise, ketchup, and either relish or pickle juice. Many versions have also added garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, cayenne, and so forth.

Ingredients in Fry Sauce

Mayonnaise. Creamy mayo is the foundation of this fry sauce recipe. It provides moisture, texture, and adds flavor to this fry sauce recipe.

Ketchup. Ketchup is a staple in fry sauce and is what gives fry sauce it’s orangish-red color.

Pickle juice. Use dill pickle juice from a pickle jar.

Paprika. Paprika contains capsaicin, a compound found in peppers that offers a variety of health benefits, not to mention delicious taste. Dr. Josh Axe’s article refers to it as an “antioxidant-rich spice that fights disease.”

Salt. Salt blends in with the other ingredients and provides flavor while enhancing the flavors of the other ingredients. Salt also helps with hydration, supports a healthy nervous system, and balances electrolytes.

Cayenne. Cayenne provides a kick to this fry sauce recipe.
