This monstrous low-carb gluten free vegan appetizer dip is healthy, easy, and fun for Halloween! It’s kid and adult approved and is the spookiest dip to bring to a Halloween party or festivity. This recipe keeps the guacamole simple by including avocados, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, cayenne, and lemon juice. Feel free to toss in diced red onion, cilantro, a diced jalapeno, and some lime if you wish. Just like the real Frankenstein, this creepy green dip has eyes, a nose, hair, and even electrodes, or bolts, in his neck! Did you know that skin tones appeared unnaturally dark on black and white film so makeup was used to compensate? Yes, it’s true! According to Quora’s article, green was frequently used on black and white films to create a pale color. Boris Karloff’s makeup in Frankenstein was green so that it would appear to be pale on film.

Ingredients in Frankenguac

Avocados. Mash the ripe avocados with a fork to make the guacamole.

Garlic powder. Garlic powder gives the dish a fragrant taste.

Onion powder. Onion powder combines with garlic powder to season the guacamole.

Salt. A little salt goes a long way and spruces this dip up.

Freshly cracked black pepper. Although you can use regular black pepper, we prefer the flavor of freshly cracked pepper.

Cayenne. Just a pinch of cayenne is all that’s needed to give the appetizer some spice. If you’re serving kids, omit the cayenne.

Lemon juice. Lemon juice (or lime) keeps the avocados from browning. If you have to make the guacamole a couple hours early, make sure to add lemon juice to it before stirring to revive the green color.

Refried black beans. I’ve never seen refried black beans anywhere besides Trader Joes and I don’t shop at Trader Joe’s very often, but that is what I used to make this recipe. Any type of refried beans will work.

Whole black olives. You’ll need whole black olives to make the bolts on the sides of the neck as well as the nose.

Blue corn tortilla chips. Blue corn tortilla chips make the monster’s hair. Try to angle the pointy side of the chip facing down, directly on the forehead. If you’re making this ahead of time, don’t add the chips until you’re ready to serve as they’ll get soggy in the fridge.

How to make the best Frankenguac

STEP 1: Place the avocados in a large bowl and mash them with a fork.

STEP 2: Add the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and cayenne and mix. Stir in the lemon juice.

STEP 3: Use a rubber spatula to spoon the mashed avocado into a rectangular dish (I used a 9x13-inch baking dish).

STEP 4: Add blue tortilla chips to the top 1/3 of the guacamole as the hair.

STEP 5: Using the black olives, make two electrodes on the sides of the neck and place one olive as the nose.

STEP 6: Heat the refried black beans in a sandwich bag for about 10-15 seconds. If not warm enough, heat an additional 5 seconds, until warm. Cut a small slit in the bottom corner of the sandwich bag and pipe eyes, a jagged mouth, and a scar above the right eye. Serve with blue corn tortilla chips.
