Our little family had a blast making sugar cookies into snowflakes, Christmas trees, gingerbread men, candy canes, stars, and snowmen! Keira—who is two—loved every minute of rolling out the dough with the roller. She grew SO possessive of the rolling pin that my husband and I just started laughing! We had so much fun that we may just make these again one more time for Santa before he pays us a visit on Christmas Eve! If you love Christmas cookies and baking, then you’ll adore my Peanut Butter Blossom and Hot Cocoa Marshmallow Cup cookies!

Step two included decorating the cookies for Santa. I used food coloring and one container of Pillsbury vanilla frosting to make various colors of frosting. Don’t forget to leave Santa a tall glass of milk on Christmas Eve so he has something to wash down your delicious sugar cookies with!

Ingredients in Easy Sugar Cookies

All-purpose flour. Use unbleached if you can although bleached will work.

Baking soda. Baking soda is a leavening agent needed to help the dough rise.

Baking powder. Baking powder helps the cookie dough spread and puff out.

Salt. Salt, according to Salt in Baking’s post, adds flavor and helps strengthen the dough which is important to reach the best texture. Salt also brings out the flavors of the remaining ingredients.

Butter. You can use either salted or unsalted butter. Butter adds a rich, creamy flavor to these sugar cookies.

Granulated sugar. Sugar sweetens up the cookies and gives them their name: sugar cookies.

Egg. Like baking soda, an egg provides leavening as well as adds taste and structure. Eggs bind all the ingredients together so they don’t fall apart.

Vanilla. Vanilla enhances all the ingredients, providing a sweet taste.
