Sensory bins are beneficial for toddlers. In fact, my daughter has played with this one since she was two years old. She’s now five and still loves this Easter Grass Sensory Bin! Toss in a spoon, jumbo tweezers, or handy scoopers to get their little hands working on fine motor skills. Toddlers should be practicing fine motor skills daily.

What benefits do sensory bins provide toddlers?

Sensory bins are beneficial for babies, toddlers, and young kids, although you must be extra cautious with babies and the types of items used as many can cause choking hazards.

While working in a small space, oftentimes designed in themes to teach them about daily life. Sensory bins calm anxious children and teach kids, particularly toddlers aged three to five, how to cooperate and share with their peers.

Easy, inexpensive homemade sensory bins are sufficient for a toddler. Allowing them to play with spoons, cups, and other grasping and pinching instruments, you are helping them practice critical fine motor skills. We like this fine motor activity set that includes handy scoopers and jumbo tweezers. I buy my sensory bin containers at Walmart for a nominal price. If you have a box, you can use that instead of a storage container or bin.

Sensory Play Benefits Children’s Developmental Skills

  • Children learn best when they can touch and feel things so providing them with a tiny environment where they can make a mess is important
  • Kids get to learn, experiment, and discover the huge world around them
  • Sensory bins promote fine motor skills
  • Enhances imaginative skills as they pretend play inside the sensory bin (themes are great for this reason)
  • Promotes critical thinking skills and problem-solving as kids need to analyze and evaluate multiple different scenarios while “working inside this miniature house” because the bin idea is similar to a kid playing in a miniature-sized house.
  • The sensory base (i.e., Easter grass, rice, beans, popcorn kernels, etc.) teaches kids sounds. For instance, beans falling sounds a lot heavier than rice falling.
  • They calm anxious children. When kids realize that the sensory bin is calming them, they will resort to playing with it repeatedly in the future.
  • Teaches toddlers language development as they learn differences and similarities, empty and full, up and down, etc.

How to Make the Best DIY Spring Easter Grass Sensory Bin

STEP 1: Open the Easter grass and evenly spread it in the bottom of a storage bin or box.

STEP 2: Place any Easter themed toys on top such as plastic eggs, stuffed animals, Easter bunny books, plastic carrots, etc.
