Ingredients in Corn Bread

Flour. Use all-purpose flour for the best taste and outcome. Flour provides the structure in baked recipes, holding it all together which results in better tasting bread.

Cornmeal. Cornmeal is needed for taste and flavor and is what gives corn bread the corn taste.

Granulated sugar. Sugar is needed to sweeten the cornmeal flavor. Just the right quantity of sugar is used to give it the perfect amount of sweetness without overdoing it.

Salt. All you need is a little bit to help counteract the sweetness of the sugar.

Baking powder. Baking powder is a leavening agent that helps the bread rise while it bakes. When it comes to baking soda and baking powder used as leavening agents, baking powder does the majority of the leavening.

Egg. Eggs help to bind all the other ingredients. They also add flavor, richness, and nutrition to baked recipes.

Milk. Milk helps to moisten the bread. It also adds flavor and protein. The main purpose of milk is to hydrate the dry ingredients and to help with browning.

Canola oil. Using canola oil helps reduce the saturated fat content as opposed to using butter or shortening, which are packed with saturated fat. It easily blends with the other ingredients and is very neutral.

Tips

  • Use regular all-purpose flour to bake with.
  • Baking powder is needed as a leavening agent.
  • You can use any type of milk. Whole milk will be the creamiest and best-tasting, but will also be higher in calories. I always use 1% and it comes out tasty.
  • You can either use canola or vegetable oil. They work the same.

How To make the best Corn Bread
