Ingredients in Copycat Cracker Barrel Hash Brown Casserole Recipe

Hash browns. Buy your favorite hash browns and defrost them before starting on this dish.

Butter. Salted or unsalted butter will work. We like this butter the best as it’s the highest quality.

Cream of cheddar cheese soup. You can substitute cream of chicken soup if you aren’t into the cream of cheddar cheese soup. This creamy soup gives the dish a creamy, thick texture.

Sour cream. Don’t skimp and buy fat free or low fat sour cream as this recipe requires the full fat version.

Onion. Onion gives a lot of flavor to this recipe and contains numerous antioxidants and nutrients.

Cheddar cheese. Always freshly grate your cheese for the highest quality flavor. The pre-shredded cheeses at the grocery store contain cancer-causing agents which prevents the cheese from clumping together.

Black pepper. Use freshly cracked black pepper for the best taste and quality.

How to make the best Copycat Cracker Barrel Hash Brown Casserole

STEP 1: Preheat your oven and grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish.

STEP 2: Combine the hash browns, butter, cream of cheddar cheese soup, sour cream, onion, cheese, and pepper in a large bowl, reserving 1 cup cheese for topping.

STEP 3: Place in the greased casserole dish and top with the remaining cheese.

STEP 4: Bake for 45-60 minutes, until bubbly.

Pro Tips

For best results, take the frozen hash browns out of the freezer 30 minutes before you plan to cook this recipe. Also, have everything prepped and ready when you start to cook this recipe. Have the onion diced, the cheddar cheese grated, and all the ingredients out, ready to get cooking. Like a professional chef, practice mise en place, which means, have your ingredients prepared and ready to go before you start to cook. This French term literally translates into: “to put in place” and expedites the cooking process exponentially. To learn more about where the term mise en place originated, read this Merriam Webster post.

Does this recipe need salt?

Feel free to add a pinch if you like although I’ve never added salt to this dish. This breakfast casserole uses just the right amounts of hash browns, butter, creamed soup, sour cream, onion, cheddar cheese, and black pepper, making it so flavorful you’ll forget about salt. Plus, the natural sodium in cheese is plenty in terms of saltiness.
