So, I haven’t made a cake in awhile and I thought I would make my favorite coffee cake recipe and share it at the same time. I hope this deliciously sweet coffee cake recipe is as popular for you as it is in my family! This is, hands down, the most delicious coffee cake I’ve ever tasted or made. I hope you try this recipe and let me know if you agree by leaving a comment at the bottom. Have a bite with a glass of milk for the ultimate splurge!

I’m not sure why it’s called coffee cake because there is nothing coffee about it! I do know however that this recipe creates a deliciously moist cake that is absolutely scrumptious. My fondest memories eating coffee cake were when my mom flew my siblings and I to Ohio to vacation with my great aunts, and my great aunt Lynn making fresh coffee cake the first morning we had after staying the night at her house. Waking up to the sweet, beautiful aroma of freshly baked coffee cake in the oven is one unforgettable smell! I love eating coffee cake for breakfast with coffee! This recipe pairs great with my Iced Caramel Mocha Latte drink recipe!

My coffee cake dessert recipe contains vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract, milk, sugar, flour, baking powder, salt, brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter, and is done in about 50 minutes. It’s the best coffee cake recipe I’ve ever made! Elevate your coffee cake by serving it topped with my insanely delicious Homemade Butter recipe!

Ingredients in Coffee Cake

Vegetable oil. Vegetable oil provides moisture and a fluffy texture to the dough.

Eggs. Eggs have nutritional benefits and help bind the dry ingredients.

Vanilla. A small amount of vanilla extract sweetens up this dessert recipe.

Milk. Use creamy whole milk for the best result although you can use any kind of milk you wish.

Sugar. Granulated sugar provides a sweet flavor to this coffee cake dessert recipe.

Flour. For best results, use all-purpose flour. We like this brand the best.

Baking powder. Baking powder is a leavening agent that helps the dough rise. It also creates a light and airy texture to this coffee cake recipe.

Salt. Salt enhances the flavors of the other ingredients.

Brown sugar. Sweet brown sugar is needed to make the streusel.

Cinnamon. Cinnamon offers numerous health benefits and provides a spicy flavor to the streusel. According to Healthline’s post, cinnamon has been used for its medicinal properties for thousands of years. Cinnamon used to be rare and was only regarded as a gift for kings, dating back as far as Ancient Egypt. It is a spice that’s loaded with antioxidants, including polyphenols. A study found that cinnamon could significantly reduce levels of markers used to measure inflammation such as C-reactive protein.

Butter. Use my homemade butter recipe for the highest quality butter. Salted or unsalted butter will work for this. Because salt is added to this recipe, you do not need to use salted butter.

History of Coffee Cake

No one is sure who invented coffee cake but it seems to have evolved from other types of sweet desserts. According to Oh Danish Bakery’s post, the first coffee cake likely originated in Germany, in Dresden. The Danish did however come up with the earliest known version of eating a sweet bread while drinking coffee, so coffee cakes actually evolved from many different types of cultural traditions.

Coffee was introduced to Europe in the 1600s. From this time, Scandinavians enjoyed eating sweet breads with their coffee. The sweet breads were filled with nuts, spices, and fruit, and this treat established a break time during busy days. The term ‘coffee cake’ did not become a commonly known name until the late 1800s.
