I am a firm lover in a simple, yet classic Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato (BLT) sandwich on toasted sourdough—with some mayo. I prefer my bacon to be crispy to the point where no fat can be seen or tasted, but you can make the bacon however you like. That’s the beauty of cooking as opposed to eating out—you can cook your food to suit your taste! BLTs on sourdough are the absolute BEST! Of course, you don’t HAVE to make them on sourdough – you can use wheat, white, or the bread of your choice. If you're a bacon lover, which I'm guessing you are, if you're reading this, then you'll love my gluten free low carb BLAT Salad and my Mini Cheeseballs.
BLTs remind me of growing up and my dad frying bacon on the weekends. In fact, I can still smell the bacon my dad fried nearly every weekend, growing up! BLTs are normally served at breakfast or brunch, but my family loves eating them for lunch and dinner as well. These are versatile and you can add or subtract ingredients as you see fit. We love to add sliced cheddar and avocado on our BLT sandwiches! There is something about the savory combination of toasted sourdough bread, crispy bacon, crunchy lettuce, tomato, mayo, avocado, and cheese – AMIRIGHT?!

Health Benefits of Tomatoes
Did you know that tomatoes are fruits rather than vegetables? It’s true. The tomato is a fruit from the nightshade family native to South America, according to Healthline’s article. Although it is a fruit, it’s typically consumed and prepared similar to a vegetable. Moreover, tomatoes are the major dietary source of the antioxidant lycopene, which has been linked to many health benefits, including reduced risk of heart disease and cancer. They’re also a good source of vitamin C, potassium, folate, and vitamin K. Read the post for more information.
The main plant compounds in tomatoes are lycopene, beta carotene, naringenin, and chlorogenic acid. Lycopene is a red pigment and antioxidant that has been studied extensively for its numerous health benefits. Beta carotene gives food an orange color and converts to vitamin A inside the body. Naringenin is a flavonoid in tomato skin that has been shown to reduce inflammation and protect against many diseases in mice. Lastly, chlorogenic acid is a powder antioxidant compound that may reduce blood pressure in those with elevated levels. Chlorophylls and carotenoids such as lycopene make the red color in tomatoes.
