Summer may be ending in a month, but there’s still time to recreate your childhood with these heavenly cheese on a sticks, which are a Hot Dog on a Stick copycat version! To me, summer is all about fairs, fireworks, and fun! To bring some fair food that tastes equally delicious, if not better than carnival or fair food, try these delicious Cheese on a Sticks that are comparable to Hot Dog on a Stick’s version (honestly, this recipe is MUCH BETTER than Hot Dog on a Stick’s IMO!). I can’t believe I waited so many years to make these. They’re SO tasty – I was totally missing out!

If you’ve tried my Copycat Hot Dog on a Stick Corn Dogs, then you’re already familiar with my mouthwatering honey-buttermilk dough as both recipes use the same dough! The honey adds so much to the dough mixture, giving it a sweet and tempting flavor. Creamy buttermilk adds lots of thickness to the batter which makes an irresistibly creamy texture. Cornmeal gives the dough a corndog-like taste while flour helps form the dough and provides structure. If you like corn, you’ll love my easy corn bread recipe!

My mouthwatering recipe calls for flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, buttermilk, an egg, honey, cheddar cheese, and canola oil and is ready in less than 25 minutes! You will need wooden skewers to make this recipe.

Ingredients in Cheese on a Stick

Flour. All-purpose flour helps bind the ingredients. It also makes the batter stick to the cheese sticks.

Cornmeal. Yellow cornmeal provides a cornbread taste.

Baking powder. Baking powder is a leavening agent.

Salt. Salt provides flavor and helps balance out the other ingredients.

Buttermilk. Buttermilk gives the dough a thicker, creamier texture.

Egg. An egg provides nutrition, flavor, and helps bind the ingredients.

Honey. Honey blends with the buttermilk mixture to produce a sweet flavor.

Cheddar. Cheddar cheese is the main ingredient in this recipe.

Canola oil. Fry the cheese sticks in canola oil.

What should I use as a dip?

For a dip, you can use ketchup, mustard, ranch, or a mixture of 1/3 cup ranch dressing with 1 tablespoon sriracha, which is our preferred dip with these delicious cheese on sticks. Use any condiment you would put on a hot dog or corn dog.

How to make the best Cheese on a Stick

STEP 1: Combine the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Make a well in the center and add the buttermilk, egg, and honey. Stir until the ingredients are incorporated.

STEP 2: Cut a one-pound block of cheddar into 8 pieces, cutting each cheese stick into 3.5-4 inch long by half inch wide pieces.

STEP 3: Roll the cheese in the flour and insert a wooden skewer in the center.

STEP 4: Dip the cheese in the batter to coat it all the way down the skewer until it reaches the bottom of the cheese. If necessary, use a knife or spoon to even out the batter, removing excess if necessary. It does get rather thick, quickly.

STEP 5: Fill a frying pan about ½ inch high with oil, and heat over high heat. When the oil is hot, add the coated cheese on a stick and fry for 1-2 minutes, turning them occasionally. Fry until golden brown on all sides. Fry them in sets until they’ve all been cooked. Let them dry on paper towels and serve warm.
