If you’re looking for one of the easiest and cheapest Valentines Day crafts, then you are in the right place! This cute Dancing Paper Heart Craft is the ideal toddler, preschool, kindergarten, and elementary school Valentine craft, and you probably already have all these items in your house. It’s so easy and the kids get to use their fine motor skills to help cut the shapes and glue the pieces together. It can also be used in homeschool and daycare.

According to Fun Early Learning, parents play a crucial role in children’s fine motor development. Developing fine motor skills in early childhood helps build the foundation for critical future skills such as feeding yourself, brushing your teeth, getting dressed, and so forth.

Fine motor skills involve using the small muscles that control the hand and fingers. Fine motor development allows kids to feed themselves, grasp small objects, buttoning and zipping attire, writing, drawing, painting, and eventually learning to tie their own shoe and write their name, although those occur later, around age 5. Completing fine motor activities helps a child feel successful which helps build their self-confidence.

Items needed to make a Dancing Paper Heart Craft

Construction paper. You’ll need red and white construction paper to make this easy kid’s craft.

Pen or pencil. A pen or pencil is needed to draw the heart shape on the paper.

Scissors. A pair of scissors is needed to cut out shapes. Use toddler friendly scissors for little hands.

Glue stick. When it comes to sticking paper to paper, I always use glue sticks over school glue.

Googly eyes. You can find googly eyes at most big box retailers such as Walmart, Target, and craft stores like Michaels and Hobby Lobby. We like these googly eyes best!

School glue. School glue such as Elmer’s is stronger and works best when gluing googly eyes on paper.

Black marker. A black marker is needed to draw the smile.

Red heart stickers. Red heart stickers make the nose, hands, and feet to your Dancing Paper Heart Craft!

How to make a Dancing Paper Heart Craft

STEP 1: Use a pen to draw a heart on the red paper. Cut the heart out.

STEP 2: Cut three pieces of white paper one-inch-wide, along the length of the paper. These will be the arms and legs. Cut one of them in half for the two shorter arms. The two longer pieces are the legs. Accordian fold the white paper by folding it into one-inch squares. Refer to the photos in the post for examples.

STEP 3: Use a glue stick to glue the legs and arms to the back of the heart. Glue sticks work great on paper crafts.

STEP 4: Apply school glue to the backs of the googly eyes and stick on the heart as eyes.

STEP 5: Use a black marker to draw a mouth.

STEP 6: Place red heart stickers as both hands, both feet, and the nose.
